Mechanical And Metallurgical Testing Services

Qais offers comprehensive mechanical and metallurgical testing services for ferrous and non-ferrous metallic materials, adhering to international standards and client specifications. We provide data that meets or exceeds the stringent requirements of companies, government agencies, and researchers worldwide, helping our customers achieve the highest standards of product quality. Our services include:

Mechanical Testing:

  • Tensile Testing : Determining yield strength, ultimate strength, and elongation for raw materials and welded coupons (pipes, plates, tubes, bolts, beams, angles, etc.) at ambient and elevated temperatures, including hot tensile, all-weld tensile, and through-thickness tensile testing.
  • Bend & Re-bend Testing : Assessing ductility and fracture resistance of raw materials and welded coupons (pipes, plates, tubes) through face bend, root bend, and re-bend tests.
  • Flatting & Flaring Testing : Detecting microscopic flaws in tubular rings (flatting) and evaluating the forming behavior of tubes or pipes during expansion (flaring).
  • Charpy Impact Testing : Measuring impact resistance at temperatures ranging from ambient to -196°C for raw materials, welded coupons, welds, fusion lines, heat-affected zones, and parent metal.
  • Hardness Testing : Assessing resistance to permanent indentation for raw materials and weld metals, including macro hardness surveys of welded coupons.

Metallurgical Examination & Evaluation:

  • Macroexamination : Evaluating weld quality by examining polished and etched cross-sections to reveal internal discontinuities, weld profile, weld passes, penetration, and overall weld quality.
  • Failure Analysis: Investigating and determining the root cause of failures through microscopy, spectroscopy, and NDT methods. This includes preparing detailed analysis reports with photographic documentation, technical findings, discussion, conclusions, and recommendations, drawing on extensive experience with corrosion-related failures in the oil/gas production and refinery industries.
  • Corrosion Testing & Evaluation:
      - Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) testing.
      - Sulfide Stress Corrosion Cracking (SSCC) testing (NACE Tensile and Four Point Bend methods).
      - Pitting corrosion testing for duplex and super duplex stainless steels.
      - Intergranular corrosion testing for austenitic stainless steel (Practices A, B, and E), nickel-based alloys, and Inconel materials.
  • Metallurgical Evaluation:
      - General macro and microstructure examination.
      - Grain size measurement.
      - Ferrite count.
      - Inclusion count.
      - Intermetallic phase determination.
      - Evaluation of HIC, SSCC, quench cracks, surface hardening inconsistencies, and metallic, intermetallic, and non-metallic inclusions.
      - Identification of manufacturing defects (laps, seams, casting & forging defects) and other microstructural anomalies.
  • Why Choose Our Services: Our comprehensive testing capabilities, adherence to international standards, and expert analysis provide reliable data to ensure material integrity and product quality.

Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES)

Our SPECTROMAX optical emission spectrometer (OES) analyzes 32 elements, including nitrogen and boron. Our extensive collection of certified reference materials (CRMs) allows us to meet the analytical needs of both ferrous and non-ferrous metal industries. We analyze a wide range of materials, including:

  • Ferrous Metals: Plain carbon steel, low alloy steel, stainless steel, duplex steel, tool steel, free-cutting steel, and cast iron (chilled condition).
  • Non-Ferrous Metals: Nickel-base alloys, copper-base alloys,Lead-base alloys and aluminum-base alloys.

Failure Analysis

In the event of failure, our meticulous Failure Investigation process springs into action. Armed with advanced microscopy, spectroscopy, and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, we unravel the causes behind material mishaps.

Expert Investigation and Documentation:
Our team of experts, with extensive experience in industries like oil, gas, and refining, skillfully conducts thorough failure investigations. Using cutting-edge tools and a dedicated approach, we perform in-depth analyses to identify the root causes of failures.

Insightful Analysis Reports:
Qais goes beyond identifying the cause of failure, providing comprehensive analysis reports that offer valuable insights for future improvements. These reports include photographic documentation, detailed technical findings, in-depth discussions, clear conclusions, and actionable recommendations for material enhancement.

Salt Spray Testing

Salt spray testing evaluates the corrosion resistance of materials and coatings by exposing samples to a saline mist within a closed chamber. Often referred to as neutral salt spray (NSS) due to the near-neutral pH of the solution, this test determines how well a coating protects a substrate in a corrosive environment. Samples are subjected to the spray for a specified duration, with regular inspections to monitor their performance. Common outcomes include observations of rusting, blistering, and peeling.

Corrosion Testing & Evaluation

Qais leads the way in corrosion testing and evaluation, protecting materials from the unseen forces that can cause damage. Our comprehensive services include:

  • Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) Testing: We detect and analyze subsurface hydrogen blisters caused by internal hydrogen pressure, revealing the mechanisms that reduce ductility, toughness, and tensile strength, and enabling preventative measures against failure.
  • Sulfide Stress Corrosion Cracking (SSCC) Testing : We address the risks posed by the corrosive combination of water, H2S, and susceptible materials. Using methods like the Tensile Test and Four Point Bend test, we identify and mitigate embrittlement to maintain structural integrity.
  • Pitting Corrosion Testing : We evaluate the pitting corrosion resistance of duplex and super duplex stainless steels.
  • Intergranular Corrosion Testing : We assess the intergranular corrosion susceptibility of austenitic stainless steel (Practices A, B, and E), nickel-based alloys, and Inconel materials.
  • Metallurgical Examination & Evaluation:
    Our metallurgical services include:
      - General macro examination
      - Microstructure analysis
      - Ferrite count
    1. - Inclusion count
      - Intermetallic phase determination
      - Evaluation of HIC, SSCC, quench cracks, surface hardening inconsistencies, and metallic, intermetallic, and non-metallic inclusions.
      - Identification of manufacturing defects (laps, seams, casting & forging defects) and other microstructural anomalies.
